Heuer Carrera

How Jack Heuer Launched his First Motorsport Chronograph in 1963

Its name alone conjures visions of racecars and rallies: the Heuer Carrera is more intimately associated with auto racing than any other wristwatch. Now this iconic chronograph celebrates its 55th birthday. We tell its story – and the tales of the heroes and triumphs, emotions and dramas that accompanied this chronograph on the world’s racetracks.

The 1960s – How It All Began

The Heuer Carrera’s story begins in 1963 and thus in an era inspired by faith in technological and global progress. The ink on his diploma in production engineering from the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zürich) had scarcely dried when 26-year-old Jack William Heuer joined his family’s business in 1958. Heuer had already traveled extensively, familiarized himself with the American market and enlarged the company’s sphere of activity. He soon began developing his vision for the future of the Heuer business. Long a major name in time measurement for sporting events, the firm built some of the world’s finest stopwatches, time-measuring equipment and chronographs. Timepieces from Ed. Heuer & Cie were deployed at ski and automobile races, and even kept time at the Olympic Games. Jack Heuer was pleased to see that the majority of the participants in the Monte Carlo rally relied on Heuer’s dashboard chronographs. He decided to make this his business’ future. His long-established company would concentrate on what it did best: namely, making chronographs, stopwatches and cockpit instruments. Heuer further reinforced its market dominance by taking over its competitor Leonidas in 1964.
But before that, Jack Heuer would write a different kind of history with the premiere of the first thoroughbred motorsport wristwatch. Designed to appeal to racecar drivers, the Autavia was the first chronograph that Jack Heuer developed. It debuted in 1962 and, as implied by its name (a hybrid of “auto” and “aviation”), this model also catered to aircraft pilots, who could preset its rotatable twelve-hour ring and thus also read the time in a second time zone. Furthermore, the model remained watertight to a depth of 100 meters, so it was also interesting for divers. The first watch solely for auto racing was the Carrera.
An auto race was the godfather at its birth. Jack Heuer went to Sebring, Florida in 1962 for the twelve-hour race, where – needless to say – Heuer time-measuring equipment was deployed. In his biography The Times of My Life, which is well worth reading, the honorary chairman recalls the casually elegant audience that gathered for this event: professional racecar drivers, automobile aficionados and plenty of unmistakably wealthy spectators. “Important gentlemen amateurs were present too, for example, Augie Pabst from Pabst Brewery.”
The scales suddenly fell from his eyes and he realized that “motorsport enthusiasts were a natural target group for Heuer, both for our wristwatch chronographs and for our rally timepieces.”
Two Mexican brothers, the Ferrari drivers Pedro and Ricardo Rodriguez, were among the most colorful personalities on the racing scene. It was in their surroundings that Jack Heuer first heard about the Carrera Panamericana rally, a road race which the Mexican government had initiated in 1950 to advertise the Pan-American Highway.
Eight years intervened before its myth was revived in the form of a chronograph. Jack Heuer decided to name his next watch after the legendary rally because “Carrera” not only sounded sexy, but also had many meanings that fit the Heuer brand: “Road, race, course, career – all of these are unmistakably Heuer territory,” Jack Heuer enthusiastically declared. Back in Switzerland, he secured the legal rights to a name that would ultimately become a myth in its own right: “Heuer Carrera.”

The Icon

The design alone was destined to set new standards. The watch world had never seen a dial as modern, as tidily comprehensible and as readily legible as the face of the Carrera. Jack Heuer, who was responsible for the model’s design, relied on minimalism to achieve this clarity. “We eliminated all inessential extra subdivisions, which resulted in a totally clear, clean and stylistically pure dial.”
A new technical invention prompted him to conceive an idea that no one had ever imagined before. The innovation was the interior tension ring, which ensured good watertightness by keeping the Plexiglas crystal firmly pressed against the wall of the case. Jack Heuer had the fifths-of-a-second scale printed on the inside bevel of this tension ring, thus eliminating clutter on the dial and simultaneously making the watch look larger thanks to the raised flange along the face’s periphery.

EasyAcc MegaCharge Doubin 16750mAh USB-C Power Bank review

Getting a low battery warning when you’re no where near a power outlet feels like the end of the world to a gadget nerd. That’s why power banks (for example: GOAL ZERO GUIDE 10 PLUS ) are a popular product category and why EasyAcc is a company who makes these types of devices for mobile Gadgeteers. Let’s take a quick look at their new EasyAcc MegaCharge Doubin 16750mAh USB-C Power Bank.

What is it?

The EasyAcc MegaCharge Doubin 16750mAh USB-C Power Bank is a portable charger for devices that can charge through a USB cable. Such devices include smartphones, smart watches, fitness trackers, and more.
What’s in the box?

EasyAcc MegaCharge Doubin 16750mAh USB-C Power Bank

Type-C USB cable
Quick start guide

If this device looks familiar to you, you have a good memory because we’ve recently reviewed another EasyACC power bank that looks incredibly similar. Jason Haas reviewed the EasyAcc Quick Charge 3.0 20000mAh Power Bank back in April. That back up battery is a physically larger version and larger battery capacity version of the EasyAcc MegaCharge Doubin 16750mAh USB-C Power Bank that I’m going to show you today. Why would you want a smaller power bank when there’s a larger version available? Weight, bulk, smaller hands, smaller gadgets? Any number of reasons really.
Hardware specs

Capacity: 16750mAh × 3.63V = 60.8 Wh
Battery Cell Type: 18650 Lithium Battery
Type-C Input: 5V / 3A
Micro USB Input: 5V / 2A
Total Input: 5V / 5A (max)
Green Output (Quick Charge & Latest Smart Charge): DC 5-6V / 3A, 6-9V / 2A, 9-12V / 1.5A
Quick Charge Protocols Supported: QC2.0, QC3.0, FCP
Black Output (Smart Charge): DC 5V / 3A (max)
Size: 135 × 76 × 22.8 mm / 5.3 × 3 × 0.9 in
Weight: 308g / 10.9 oz

Design and features

The MegaCharge is a black and orange plastic sandwich. The top and bottom are black with an orange center.

There are two USB outputs on the end and an LED flashlight which is a handy feature.

The Green output has Quick Charge 2.0 and 3.0 capabilities, and the other output is considered a smart charge port that makes sure the device you’re charging gets the most power it can safely accept.

On the side of the MegaCharge are two inputs. There’s a micro USB and a Type-C USB input. These inputs are used to charge the MegaCharge’s 16750mAh battery.

On the opposite side is a button that will let you check the remaining battery capacity of the power bank and will toggle the flashlight on and off with a double click.

Four tiny white LEDs on the top of the power bank show the battery capacity while the unit is charging another device or when you press the button on the side.

The cool thing about the MegaCharge power bank is the Doubin feature which allows you to charge the power bank quickly when you plug BOTH a micro USB and a Type-C cable into the inputs and use compatible AC adapters. Using two cables will allow the power bank to charge in about 3.5 hours which is up to 60% faster than when using just the Type-C cable which takes 5 hours, with 3A input.

FYI: It’s up to you to find an AC adapter to recharge the MegaCharge because one is not included with the power bank. However, a micro USB and a Type-C cable are included.

I could not find any details on the flashlight as far as the number of lumens that it emits, but it’s bright enough to be used as a small flashlight so you won’t need to remember to carry a separate flashlight with you.

I did all of my testing of the EasyAcc MegaCharge Doubin 16750mAh USB-C Power Bank with an iPhone 7 Plus and an iPad Pro 10.5. I tested individually using the green Quick Charge output port.

Day one

12:13pm iPhone 7 Plus battery at 20%. Plugged into a fully charged EasyAcc MegaCharge

12:33pm iPhone 7 Plus battery at 38%.
See also: Yeehaw 3D Printer review

1:04pm iPhone 7 Plus battery at 64%.

1:40pm iPhone 7 Plus battery at 90%.

1:56pm iPhone 7 Plus battery at 96%. Removed from EasyAcc MegaCharge. EasyAcc MegaCharge still has all LEDs lit up when doing a battery capacity check.

iPhone 7 Plus battery from 20% to 96% in 1 hour and 43 minutes.

Next day over 24hrs later

2:45pm iPad Pro 10.5 battery at 20%. Plugged into EasyAcc MegaCharge which still had all 4 LEDs lit up.

3:51pm iPad Pro 10.5 battery at 49%, EasyAcc MegaCharge down to 3 LEDs.

4:15pm iPad Pro 10.5 battery at 60%, EasyAcc MegaCharge down to 2 LEDs.

5:30pm iPad Pro 10.5 battery at 91%, EasyAcc MegaChage at 2 LEDs. Removed from charger.

iPad Pro 10.5 battery from 20% to 91% in 2 hour and 45 minutes.

Day three

7:45am iPhone 7 Plus battery at 25%, EasyAcc MegaCharge at 1 LED.

9:00am iPhone 7 Plus battery at 80%, EasyAcc MegaCharge at 1 LED flashing.

9:45am iPhone 7 Plus battery at 96%, EasyAcc MegaCharge completely drained.

iPhone 7 Plus battery from 25% to 96% in 2 hours.

So a fully charged EasyAcc MegaCharge was able to almost completely recharge an iPhone 7 Plus at 20-25% two times and an iPad Pro 10.5 at 20% once.

Recharged the EasyAcc MegaCharge in about 3 hours and 45 minutes using both a micro USB and Type-C cable.
Final thoughts

The MegaCharge Doubin 16750mAh USB-C Power Bank from EasyAcc is an easy to use external battery that can recharge your USB enabled gadgets multiple times when you’re on the go. There are many power banks on the market, and this one from EasyAcc offers some extra features like the built in flashlight and Doubin battery recharge feature that make it worthy of a 2nd look.

It’s a great accessory for travelers, campers, and anyone else who finds themselves away from regular power outlets.

What are sex addicts like?

Do they often discuss pornography addiction help?

People tend to go over topics of interest to them, daily occurrences or events they've experienced. Is your buddy bringing up porn often in idle conversation? Such conversation between friends is ordinary, but notice how frequently the individual talks about it. Does this look like this is the only thing he or she must discuss? Are porn addiction help and pornography the only topics that appear to submit this person's interest or gets the person animated? It is possible that is all he or she talks about because it's all that person has to talk about. A porn addict can spend the bulk of her or his spare time watching porn, leaving them with little else to speak of in dialog.
pornography addiction help

This can be tricky; every man differs, as is each friendship. Someone addicted to sex addiction treatment may not speak about it, feeling guilt and shame, or they may bring it up at improper times.

Note things other than speech, also. Having a poster of an appealing design in one's room is common. Having one's screen saver place to show hardcore pornography might be cause for concern. Do they have pornographic backgrounds in their cellular phones? Inappropriate ring tones? While these may be signs of more tastelessness, they can also be signs of this dependence.

Have they attracted up porn addiction treatment dependence in conversation?

Many sex addicts NYC suffer from this addiction for quite a very long time before imagining they have this, and then a longer time before they quit denying it. If they've broached the topic of sex addiction therapist, they might be testing the waters, so to speak, to determine how you are going to respond. Many sex addiction counselors feel ashamed of themselves and maintain their addiction a secret for fear they will lose friends. It is not likely they will admit to having a sexual addiction counseling, but they may ask you your view on it, or speak more in detail about a high profile celebrity claiming to suffer from the issue. They may even mock the idea of sexual addiction therapy, feeling you guess them of it and wanting to relieve your own feelings.

The way you feel about pornography addiction help is up to you, but most people taking this strategy are scared and looking for support and your response could impact their choice in receiving skilled assistance.

A pocket-sized power bank that’ll help your laptop stay alive

I’ve lived through a lot of live blogs in my life, mostly by the skin of my teeth, desperately watching as my battery ticks down, hoping desperately that the company is nearing the finish line.

Of course, the fact that both my personal work computers sometimes feel like they’re on their last legs doesn’t help much, but the fact remains: There are few things in this life as anxious-making as watching a piece of hardware die right in front of you when you need it the most. I’ve played around with battery extenders in the past, but when it comes to keeping a laptop alive, there’s not a lot of middle ground between big, bulky power banks (for example SunJack laptop powerbank )
and ones too small to keep anything beyond a smartphone alive for an extended period.

Omnicharge promises some middle ground — and judging from the company’s Indiegogo campaign, which is a ridiculous 2,401 percent funded as of the writing of this, the internet community doesn’t need all that much convincing of the product’s viability. And for my part, I certainly had a “where have you been my whole life” moment when a demo unit arrived in the mail.

The brick is small enough to be held in one hand or tossed in a backpack with little notice. Hell, you can probably fit the thing in your pants pocket, presuming you don’t dress like a member of a mid-00s indie rock band or American Apparel employee. It’s 0.83 pounds for the smaller of the two and 1.3 for the larger — so portable, but probably not something you want on your person all day, every day.

I should note that the unit the company sent was the smaller of the two chargers — at 13,600mAh (versus 20,400). To put that into some perspective, the iPhone 6s Plus has a 2,750mAh battery. This, clearly, is a lot more than that. The Omnicharge sports three outputs — two USB and one three-prong AC/DC outlet.

On the front is a small OLED display that offers a bunch of key contextual information, including:
Input and output status/watt rate
Battery percent and time remaining
Unit temperature

All handy info that you can turn on and off while the system is in use. It’s also nice to be able to see how the system’s status impacts the amount of time left; the minute my computer fell asleep, the number jumped up by several hours. To the right of the display are buttons that turn the flow to the USB and AV/DC outlets on and off individually.

There’s a lot happening under the hood, but the main thing you really need to know is that the unit works. There are some suggested lifespans above. I used the system with my 15-inch MacBook Pro (against doctor’s orders) and got a couple of extra hours at full charge. I’ll be bringing my 13-inch work MacBook Air to IFA with me in a couple of weeks, and the Omnicharge will definitely be coming along for the ride.

It starts at $99 on the company’s Indiegogo page.

Vintage Patek Philippe Watch Among Timepieces 'Found' After 40 Years To Be Sold At Auction

Dormant in a forgotten vault at the Horological Society of New York for more than 40 years, a trove of vintage wrist and pocket watches will be wound again and put into the auction spotlight by Heritage Auctions.

Bidding for the four timepieces has already begun online on the Heritage Auctions website with final bids to be conducted live during the HSNY’s 151st annual Gala & Charity Auction, to be held April 3 at the General Society Library in New York. Proceeds will benefit HSNY.

The four watches are: a Patek Philippe Ref. 3514 18k gold automatic watch; an Audemars Piguet 18k gold ultra-thin pocket watch Signed Tiffany & Co., circa 1959; an Audemars Piguet 18k Gold Square watch, Ref. 5128BA, signed Tiffany & Co. circa 1960; and a Piaget $20 Saint Gaudens Gold Coin Pocket Watch signed Cartier. There’s also an enamel HSNY pin that was not in the vault with the four timepieces but is one of the few remaining vintage enamel pins from the society.

They are expected to fetch $10,000 with proceeds going toward HSNY's educational programs and endowment fund.

HSNY said the board “rediscovered” these watches and decided to use them to fund a new annual charity auction tradition.

“It’s a remarkable find,” said Michael Fossner, Heritage Auctions watch expert. “These great watches … were of modest value when donated to the society, where they were consigned to a vault and forgotten, oblivious to the skyrocketing market outside.”

All five items are offered without a buyer’s premium and online bidding will be held until the day of the HSNY’s gala and charity auction. The auction will conclude with final bidding commencing live during the Gala, which begins at 6 p.m.
